Building Families Through The Miracle Of Adoption

Brown Eyed Girl

Eyes of Onyx
I LOVE HER!

With my cousins Hunter & Hannah

The "look" that wraps my daddy even more around my finger!

Halle-Grace with her great-grandmother Parker who loves her to pieces!
Today Halle-Grace went to church for the first time all dolled up. Jason took her to the nursery (thank goodness, otherwise Leland would have been disrupted the entire service)!

We had lots of friends and family visit with Halle-Grace! What a nice surprise! Jason & I enjoy the company as much as Halle-Grace does. We have had a VERY tough week. As I stated earlier...the roller coaster of emotions! We have the most beautiful baby girl with a personality to die for and at the same time we lose our first baby girl who was definitely our shadow! The house seems SO quite without Gabby, especially when Halle-Grace is sleeping. I have heard that time heals a broken heart...well, let the clock begin ticking because my heart is broken! I must admit the SPIT baths from Halle-Grace certainly lift my spirits! LOL

Thanks Nanny for all of the new clothes! She will love them...just not putting them on, she doesn't like to be still!

Halle-Grace was introduced to her jump-a-roo and SHE LOVES IT! She is such a blessing and SO funny!

I want to wish some of my fellow HENS the best of luck tomorrow as they travel to TQ to adopt their little angels (Gabrielle & Kate). I am praying for your families and I know you are about the POP with excitement! DON'T EAT THE BLACK CHICKEN DISH. LOL!

God Bless!

At home and first trip to see the Pediatrician

Today Halle-Grace had an appointment at Shelby Children's Clinic. She really showed off for the doctor and had to get shots (not fun)! Mama can't take anymore sadness this week!!! She is in the 5th percentile of weight for her age (again, our tiny miracle), however, the doctor says she looks GREAT, is healthy and very smart!

Jason wants to add his photos of the visit soon. He was taking photos of everyone (they probably thought...crazy dad). Her follow up is in December.

The story continues...please stay tuned!

Jason just said to me, "I hope people don't stop reading the blog now that we are home." Just so you will know, we are planning to keep the blog going to capture the NEW journey that God has blessed us with...Miss Halle-Grace Khanh Devine! We are headed out to do a little shopping today. Baby food, fall clothes (as she is SO tiny and the 9 & 12 month clothes might fit next fall) Stay tuned...more photos are coming soon!

Till We Meet Again...

Gabby Asleep At Home

Psalm 130:1-2 – Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

Today I gained a whole new understanding of the Psalmists lament to God for mercy. I also gained an understanding of needing to write down my grief, just as the Psalmist wrote his years ago. As you can tell from Shannon’s earlier entry, today has been a day of both joy and sadness. Today was the close of one chapter in our lives while another one was started.

This morning marked the first morning Halle-Grace woke in her home. It has been a long wait, over two years in the making. What a blessing to finally see our adoption process come to fruition. Unfortunately, today marked the end of Gabby’s time in our worldly lives. After a week long hard-fought battle Gabby left us today to go on home to Heaven and wait for us there. I have never hurt as deeply as I am now. It IS from the depths I cry out to God and it will only be through His grace that we make it through.

Although I miss my “shadow” so bad I feel like I am about to suffocate, I have to remember, Gabby was never mine. I did not create her. I can take no credit for her character, demeanor and behavior. She was God’s handiwork. She was His creation and as such I was simply a steward of her life on earth. God chose to wonderfully bless my life with seven amazing years as her daddy. And even though this past week I pleaded for more time, I had to remind myself of how much less meaningful my life would have been without God allowing me the time with her that I had. Of course it is human nature to want more and more, but God did me the favor by blessing me with the time I had. I am grateful for the priceless memories that I will forever cherish.

Others have asked me before, “Do pets go to heaven?” And although there are no passages in the Bible that speak specific to this matter I personally believe we do know enough of God’s character and initial plan and design to be able to answer this question. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and all that was upon it, and He saw that it was good. God cares enough about the birds of the sky to make sure they have a home. And there are references to the lion and lamb lying beside each other in the New Jerusalem. For me, that is sufficient, God loves all his creation and animals WILL be in heaven. We are told that he withholds no good blessings to those he loves, and I have already mentioned how much of a blessing Gabby is to me. Take with that, that no eye has seen, no ear has heard nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him,and I think it almost becomes absurd to even doubt that something so precious and loving as Gabby would NOT be in heaven. To be honest, Gabby has been the most perfect example of God’s unwavering total love for us. I think the better question is, “Where did she hide her wings while she was here?”

Now, some will say, but animals don’t have souls, therefore they will not be in heaven. Well, to that I say that theologically speaking angels do not have souls either but we ARE told they are and will be in heaven, so, the matter is settled. Gabby is already there and will be waiting on me to get the laser out when I finally make the journey.

My emotions have run the gambit today. But I have found piece in a recent conversation with a very close friend of mine, Joe Westfall. Joe, the pastor at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist recently told me of the overwhelming grief, at times, he experiences as a pastor. Dealing with all kinds of tragedy and loss of his parishioners can be daunting at best and incapacitating at worse. However, as Joe put it, he finds comfort in knowing this is NOT the end of the story.

Chapter, maybe, but not the end of the story. And as one chapter closes and another begins I try and take a lesson from God. Halle-Grace, like Gabby, does not belong to me. True, she has been entrusted to me, but she belongs to God and I am just the steward with the responsibility to do the best I can and love her, care for her and teach her as I think he would do. We are not promised a tomorrow, but we are promised an eternity. Prior to Gabby’s initial diagnosis with AIHA I took her life for granted. But I can honestly say that for the past year, every day I gave God thanks for the gift of her life and the blessing it bestowed on me. I am forever grateful.

Recently I read the book “The Great Divorce” by C.S. Lewis, one of my favorite author’s. As a master of allegory he eloquently states my opinion of pets in the afterlife. In this book a gentlemen has died and has gone purgatory and is meeting people from heaven and hell and trying to make sense of it all. He is being guided by, and able to ask questions of, his guiding angel. The following is an exert from that book and is a detail of his meeting of one lady in particular:

“Is it?…is it? I whispered to my guide.
‘Not at all,’ he said. ‘It is someone you have never heard of. Her name is Sarah Smith and she lived at Golder’s Green.’
‘She seems to be…well, a person of particular importance?’
‘Yes, she is one of the great ones. You have heard that fame in this country and fame on Earth are two quite different things.’
‘And who are these gigantic people…look! The are like emeralds…who are dancing and throwing flowers before her.’
‘Haven’t you read your Milton? “A thousand liveried angels lackey her?”
‘And who are all these young men and women on each side?’
‘They are her sons and daughters.’
‘She must have had a very large family sir.’
‘Every young man or boy that met her became her son-even if it was only the boy that brought the meat to her back door. Every girl that met her was her daughter.’
‘Isn’t that a bit hard on their own parents?’
‘No. There are those that steal other’s people’s children. But her motherhood was of a different kind. Those on whom it fell went back to their natural parents loving them more. Few men looked on her without becoming, in a certain fashion, her lovers. But it was the kind of love that made them not less true, but truer, to their own wives.’
‘And how…but hello! What are all these animals? A cat-two cats-dozens of cats. And all these dogs…why, I can’t count them all. And the birds. And the horses.’
‘They are her beasts.’
‘Did she keep a sort of zoo? I mean, this is a bit too much.’
‘Every beast and bird that came near her had its place in her love. In her they became themselves. And now the abundance of life she has in Christ from the Father flows over into them. It is like when you throw a stone into a pool, and the concentric waves spread out further and further. Who knows where it will end? Redeemed humanity is still young, it has hardly come to its full strength. But already there is joy enough in the little finger of a great saint such as yonder lady to waken all the dead things of the universe into life.’

May the infinite love of God for his creation sustain Gabby through all eternity.

October 1, 2008. The earth is a little less of a place and even heaven has been improved.

Gabby, we love you.

HALLE-GRACE ARRIVES HOME FROM VIETNAM...(photos from airport coming soon, they were not taken with mama's camera) Below are photos from CVS (Carolina Vet. Specialists) after our Homecoming surprise at the airport, we went immediately to see Gabby. The staff is so amazing! Halle-Grace was able to see Gabby while Shannon was taking Gabby for a walk. She recognized Gabby from the webcam and grunted at her trying to get her attention:)
The staff at CVS are "angels" for all of their love and what they do is a calling...it has to be! They tried to do everything possible to make Gabby well but it was not God's plan.

The Angels at CVS! We love you all! Thanks for EVERYTHING!

The sign they made for Shannon & Halle-Grace

Halle-Grace flying home from Vietnam

Halle-Grace's first time in her car seat. She did well...as long as daddy was blowing the horn (reminded her of all of the motor bikes in her birth country).

Today, Gabby received lots of kisses from her daddy but her HEAVENLY Father welcomed her with ULTIMATE healing and kisses to last for all of eternity! We will see you again Gabby Girl!

After long flights and delays at US customs (that caused us to miss our flight from Dallas to Charlotte) we are finally home. We were greeted by family and friends! I will post lots of photos soon! I have slept about 4 hours since Monday (Hanoi time) which would be Sunday here.
"My cousins waiting to meet me" Hannah, Hunter, Lizzy & Zoey

The HENS WIN!

I opened this email message this morning. HOW FUNNY! Thanks for the laugh Sherry! Hens, Sherry is also a CAS AP.

Update on Gabby: Jason says she is improving so much every day!!! She walks outside with him during her potty breaks and is jumping around and tried to pull him to the parking lot. She is eating about a tablespoon at a time but is keeping it down! THANKS FOR THE PRAYERS. Both of my girls are going to be home soon! PRAISE GOD!

Look who LOVES to dry her hair...

Downtown Hanoi...I bet I will be back in a year or 2?

The trip downtown was normal *if there is such a thing as normal in Hanoi* 1000s of motor bikes and horns every second. We have all adoption day gifts covered and found a great price on a stroller (since our first lay-over is close to 5 hours) it will come in handy. It is bright GREEN and says HONG baby on it I think. LOL!

Nanny, Halle-Grace and I had a relaxing snack at Highland's Coffee *one of Jason's favorite spots in Hanoi* and Little Miss Magic was entertaining everyone...here are a few pics.

Jason called me with an update on Gabby and she is doing well. She has used the potty and has eaten some baby food and even a little bite of chicken for Jason. The doctors are very pleased with her progress. Jason sent me this picture of her and he said she looks GREAT compared to how she looked prior to the surgery POOR BABY!!!

So, it looks like Gabby has already decided to be a lamp for Halloween! Pray this baby gets well real soon!!! Granny visited with Gabby and Jason said she wagged her tail off! Gabby LOVES Granny and the staff at CVS...I think they are pretty fond of her as well. I continue to pray that she gets well and is back home soon (as soon as she is strong enough and ready for WILD WOMAN)! Nanny found Halle-Grace's Halloween costume today and it is PERFECT for the STINKER!

SO, tomorrow we head to the Embassy!!! I am not nervous. Hopefully they will be able to process Halle-Grace's US Visa and we will be on our 11:30 flight tomorrow night. I have just about completed all packing. It is hard to believe I have lived in Hanoi, Vietnam for a month! Let's hope adoptions re-open in the near future.

Thanks and Good Night from Vietnam!

Shannon

Last trip downtown...packing....praying!

We are getting ready to take our final trip downtown to finish up a little shopping (well, Nanny wants to shop, what' new?) We are pretty much packed and ready to go. I have stocked up on Dielac (Vietnamese formula) for Halle-Grace and Milo for me. Milo is a brand of cereal that I LOVE! It is chocolate and YUMMY!
Nanny's credit card!

I talked to Jason and he said Gabby is still doing OK considering all that she has been through! OH, I want her home so BAD! That is my constant prayer...for her to get well. I cannot imagine not being able to share this new chapter in our lives with her. Gabby loves children and Halle-Grace LOVED seeing her on the webcam before she went into the hospital.

We are scheduled for our Embassy appointment tomorrow! I hope that goes well. If so, we will be boarding our flight to Japan..then Dallas, TX...then finally Charlotte, NC! If we do not get her Visa tomorrow, our itinerary is the same (just moved to Wed. night). We arrive in Charlotte at 2:45pm Tuesday...then we go through customs, etc. THEN I AM HEADED TO CVS to see Gabby and give her lots of lovin!

"I'm packed, let's go home and see everybody"

Please pray for our trip home and for Gabby to continue to improve daily! We want to be a family "together" again.

I will post more about our trip when we return from downtown, hopefully, Nanny will not have any "taxi" episodes today.

Suzanne, Mike, Hunter and Hannah went to the fair and sent us these photos. HENS, my sister took a special picture just for us!!! LOL. I know you will love this one!!!

"HEY, It's the HOT HENS"

"Check out what my handsome cousin won at the Cleveland Co. Fair" After Hunter won, he immediately said, "these are for Halle-Grace" THANKS HUNTER!!!

These are TOO FUNNY NOT TO SHARE...

So, whoever tells Halle-Grace about the Cleveland County Fair has to take her next year!!! HA HA!

Lizzy & Zoey, if you are reading this and you go to the fair, hurry and send me a picture.

Thank you all for your prayers! God is faithful!

Aunt Sally & Gloria, thank you for offering your guest room as well. Jason appreciated your call and we all appreciate the prayers. Jason & Granny are still camping out in the parking lot. Gabby is doing well (considering all she has been through). She had surgery about 48 hours ago and she is in the hands of the BEST at CVS. Jason told me they were able to take her outside for a potty break! HOW AWESOME!!! She is such a fighter!

Words cannot express our gratitude to the entire staff/team at Carolina Vet. Specialist in Charlotte. WE LOVE YOU ALL and you ARE family!Halle-Grace is ready to meet you and Gabby too! THANK YOU FOR TAKING CARE OF HER!
GET WELL SOON GABBY! When you get home you can stand on the stairs (like you are in the photo) and wait to play laser with your dad:)

Right now we are set to leave Hanoi on Monday night (if we receive Halle-Grace's visa Monday afternoon) if not, we will leave on Wed. night. If we leave Monday night, we will be arriving in Charlotte on Tuesday around 2:45pm
I am not stressed about the flight nor the time...God is in control and as Uncle Scott told Jason, "if you believe HIS plan is perfect, then start acting like it." WOW, how true is that statement!!! Scott's faith amazes me! He is a testimony for everyone he meets.

(I know this entry is jumping "all over the place" but there are so many things on my heart and my emotions are just flowing onto the screen!)

I have started packing and getting Halle-Grace set for a LONG flight home. I am SO blessed that Nanny is still here and is traveling with me. The first place I am going when I arrive in Charlotte...to see GABBY girl!

Again, thank you all for the MANY prayers along this journey to Halle-Grace. Really, "The Journey" is just NOW beginning. Now all the stress and anxiety can turn into fun and a lifetime of memories. Get well soon Gabby! You are a fighter! Can't wait to see my Gabby girl!!!!

God Bless you ALL! Pray us home and Gabby too!

Shannon

Both of our babies saw the doctor today! Lord, please be with Gabby, she needs extra special care.

Gabby is in critical condition and her situation is "touch and go" the doctor says! Jason & Granny are still at the vet. hospital. Last night, they went to Wal-mart and bought pillows and blankets to sleep in the parking lot. There is a gas shortage in western NC so it's a good thing they are sitting in one place.

Meanwhile, Nanny is still in Vietnam. She did not leave today because I am a complete basketcase! Some of you may not understand but Gabby is our little girl too and we love her SO very much! She is our first child. We are so excited to introduce Halle-Grace to Gabby so I pray she can pull through this time.

Today Halle-Grace had her medical at the SOS and she passed with flying colors. She loved the doctor! She weighs 15 pounds and is 70 cm long. She loved having her ears and her throat checked out and when we took her diaper off to put her on the scale she let loose!!! Thankfully, there was a "pee pad" on the scale! HA HA! The doctor said Halle-Grace was "perfect". She entertained the nurse and the doctor. Our Embassy appointment is set for Monday and Thu told us we should get Halle-Grace's visa by the end of the day Monday.

THANK YOU Carolina Vet. Specialist for taking such amazing care of Gabby! We love you like family and you have been SO good to Gabby through all of her medical needs. We look forward to the day BOTH of our girls are HOME safe, happy & HEALTHY!!! What a HOMECOMING it's going to be....I pray!

God Bless you all!

Shannon
